KJ's Journey

Bike ride to Padmasambhava

29/6/2014

Boring Leh
Life in Leh is actually quite boring, and spending several days here we realized that we arrived too early. Actually it is my fault, I thought we needed longer to adjust. At hindsight, we could have stayed in Manali several more days.

The beer test
Few days ago, I felt that I was getting adjusted to the altitude and I promised Marcus to drink some beer with him. I had one beer in mind, which ended up with 6 bottles of beer and some Indian whiskey. It was good until the next day haha. Mind was clear, but body was so weak, it took me 1 full day to recuperate. Drinking at high altitude, I must say is interesting, the alcohol hits you in a very different way. Lesson learned the hard way. Will take it easy on the alcohol.

Food from the locals
After our beer test, we got so hungry the guesthouse family made food for us which was great. I was so hungry that I stuffed myself haha.

The Royal Enfield
Marcus has laid his eyes on this motorbike since the day we arrived in Leh. The day before yesterday while I was picking up my laundry I saw Marcus suddenly driving by on the Motorbike. We were planning to go to Takthuk monastery by bike, to visit the Padmasambhava cave, and spend some time there to meditate and pray. (Padmasabhava is known as the second Buddha, who transmitted Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet, Bhutan and neighbouring countries).  Padmasambhava supposed to have meditated for a some while in the cave in Takthuk monastery.

During our ride we accidentally arrived at Chemrey monastery first, believing it was Takthuk monastery, which apparently Padmasambhava also meditated here.

I must say, driving the roads here in the Himalayas, I understand why there are so many bikers, it gives you peace while driving on the bike. We were very lucky to have great weather. We enjoyed the bike ride a lot and planning to rent the bike again to go to Likir monastery.

Not much to tell, enjoy the pictures
